For the week of September 28, 2015

Fill me in…

If you’re fascinated by #music_dna, now is the time to stop by the channel. @staxwell showcased a sound lineage that you can only expect from hearing an original tune like “Dreams” by Stark Reality. Apparently, whoever produced this track for Schoolboy Q is not the only one impressed. After originally being released in 1970, the album which this song appeared on was re-released by Stones Throw in 2003 and again released (separate compilation) by Now-Again Records in 2013.

This past week, there was a little spike in #jazz tracks and @pedronunes introduced us to an intriguing #jazz figure, Dorothy Ashby. As a jazz harpist, she wasn’t in the majority of the genre’s instrumentalists, but I think most jazz cats can agree that the sound is nothing less than essential. She didn’t stop with harps either, and became one of the only people to successfully integrate the Japanese instrument, the koto, into jazz music...mad props.

What else is going on?

The Fresh Prince is back. Will Smith has been in the studio lately and says he recorded 30 new songs DJ Jazzy Jeff. I don’t know about y’all, but we definitely got down to his classic jam, ‘Summertime’ - which is when we can expect to catch him on tour. He’s already released a remix of one of Bomba Estero’s tracks and we’ll have to wait for the others. Will: don’t f*ck this up.

Staying with the theme of film + music, Martin Scorsese and Mick Jagger have gotten together on an HBO series called, ‘Vinyl’ to document the scene as punk and disco were breaking out in the 70’s. We won’t be able to start watching until 2016, but check the preview below:

Don’t sleep on…

Quite a bit of praise for the UK artist, Jai Paul, last week. Apparently, he’s been in the dark for quite some time, but fans (including Dan Snaith of Caribou) don’t let that hold back their praise. His tracks (seemingly rare, at this point) have achieved the highest respect by industry veterans and all ears point to giving this dude a listen. Here’s his track, ‘Jasmine’:
