Fill me in…

#jazz keeps on rolling and we’ve got no problem with that. The legend, Thelonious Monk, got some love, but @berlinkat just went to a Robert Glasper Trio show in - you guessed it - Berlin. I’ve heard the name before, but needed to be reminded to actually give it a listen...I realized I’ve been missing out. The Houston, TX native has worked with notables such as Q-Tip, J-Dilla, Jay Z and Charles Tolliver and also has a Grammy under his belt for his album, Black Radio. Here’s a recording of the trio performing “So Beautiful” up at Capitol Studios in LA:

If you haven’t yet, this upcoming week would be a good time to join the #live_performances channel. This weekend, we have the chance to represent #music at Capitol Hill Block Party in Seattle! Take to the channel to let us know which artists we should see perform and who to try and talk to. I’ve heard it’s pretty tough to get interviews, but we’re going to try anyways. We’ll be sharing photos and updates on the channel and possibly setting up a Periscope feed if you guys are interested. Let us know! Here’s a tune from Toro Y Moi, the artist I’m most excited to see:

What else is going on?

Spotify is now delivering personalized playlists to its users weekly to make sure they don’t fall behind in the streaming services race. With so many relevant music streaming services, it seems the introduction of Apple Music made everybody else step their game up. When it comes to how people listen to digital music nowadays, the data shows that listeners choose playlists over albums, but I’m curious to see how long that lasts. I get a sense that things are moving back to full album listenings - just as vinyl sales are growing while CD’s and digital music sales decline.

Also, some pretty sad news for the former Groovesharkers as it’s co-founder was found dead yesterday.

Don’t sleep on…

Snarky Puppy may or may not be a name that you’ve heard, but with a Grammy win in 2014, the Brooklyn-based Jazz/Funk/World group is ready to shine. Whether that scene is something you’re into or not, I think it’ll be hard not to feel the power of music after watching this performance with the incredibly talented 13-year-old singer, Jayna Brown. On top of that, there’s a guitar solo that goes beyond the years of a dude that can’t be too much older than Jayna. If you don’t get the chills after watching this in it’s entirety, go see a doctor. Big s/o to @isaac for unearthing this one for the community:
