For the week of March 20, 2016

CORRECTION on 041: Nicola Cruz is from Ecuador, not Peru. My badd...

Fill me in…

@trinadafilipina came through with the #covers this week and we’re glad she did. Sometimes an unexpected flip on a song engrained in the radio waves of 2011 is just what we need 5 years later. Especially when it comes from a group with such a distinct sound as London musicians, Oh Wonder. Erase everything you know about “Crazy in Love” and thank BBC1 for making this happen:

Oh Wonder - Crazy In Love (Beyonce cover in the Live Lounge)

#disco-_-funkyness felt the love this past week and in spreading that love, it’s an honor to put you on a re-work of Charles Jackson’s 1979 groove, “I’m Gonna Get Your Love”. It’s Serge Gamesbourg on the re-edit who mostly finds himself “making headnodding beats” that revolve around “funky and soulful necksnapping tunes”. Well, Serge, we thank you and keep doing what you’re doing.

What else is going on?

It should come as no surprise to #hiphop heads that we lost a great one last week: A Tribe Called Quest’s, Phife Dawg. His impact on both the genre and music itself was recognized throughout the community and out came several artists to back that up. Outkast, Kendrick, Chuck D and more spoke out on an episode of Q-Tip’s Beats1 show, Abstract Radio, to speak out about Phife’s influence. Q-Tip (fellow Tribe member) assembled a 2 hour mix that’ll pull emotions for anyone who was close to their music. If you didn’t catch it on Beats1, you can listen to it via Mixcloud here.

Don’t sleep on…

Melbourne native and brother of Thrupence, Edward Vanzet. It won’t take too long to realize the talent that exists with this guy, even though his output up to today is relatively minimal. His most recent album, Everyday, was released about a month ago and before that was a release in 2014. It seems his songs are very carefully crafted to drive some type of mood straight through you. We could say psychedelic, pop, alternative, etc...just listen for yourself.
