#044: For the week of April 3rd, 2016

The Needle Podcast #043: Listen here.

Fill me in…

#electronic overperformed this past week so instead of giving it the limelight again, we’re going to take it to a channel that hasn’t hit #theneedle in a very long time: #reggae. Radio Citizen is a project by a guy named Niko Schabel and find its home in Germany. The collective features several musicians who are put together for specific projects which find a larger musical range than most others you’ve probably come across. For that reason, it wouldn’t do justice to consider Radio Citizen a #reggae group, but this particular tune that they worked on with vocalist Bajka definitely rings true with reggae influences...and lots of dub. S/O to @sarita for putting the channel (few, but strong!) on to ‘El Cielo’:

And speaking of #reggae, @nelo put us on to a #brazilian artist named Céu who did a great job with Bob Marley’s ‘Concrete Jungle’ on her first album (self-titled) which was released in 2005. Céu is from one of the largest concrete jungles in the world, São Paulo, and is probably not new to those who call that city home. She’s been recognized for her work all around the world and for good reason. Her voice is unique, but feels like a perfect fit on everything she sings on. ‘Concrete Jungle’ is no exception:

What else is going on?

Coachella kicks off weekend and you guys may remember hearing about (or seeing) Tupac showing up for a surprise show a few years back. Now, it seems Biggie is finally getting wind of the newest trend and is coming back in hologram form. Where he plans to take is virtual body is TBD, but it’s coming. More on Mashable.

Major Key alert. DJ Khaled has announced a new album. And it’s called Major Key.

For those of you who may have followed up on Flying Lotus’ last film project entitled FuckkkYouuu, he’s got some more content on the way. This time, the title is a little more PG; LoveTrue. It’s not totally his project as he only scored the film for Shia LaBeouf, but close enough. Apparently it’s pretty good and it premiers at the Tribeca Film Festival toward the back half of this week. Here’s the trailer for you:

Don’t sleep on…

#jazz in Los Angeles. If you’ve followed along, you are well aware of Kamasi Washington, Thundercat, Flying Lotus and more. In adding to the list of LA musicians who channel #jazz in their music, it’s about time to meet Terrace Martin. Recently, the veteran producer/musician has finally been getting play around the radio community, but he’s a well known name to people within the industry. His most recent studio album, Velvet Portraits, was released on April 1 and pays respect to the city that bred him. And relating a Donny Hathaway track to the hometown, here’s ‘Valdez off Crenshaw’ for you. Enjoy:
