The Needle 054: For the week of June 12th, 2016

Fill me in…

#chill got off to a good start at the very beginning of the week with a song called “Remember” by Antarctica based (according to his SoundCloud) musician, Shook...must be cold down there. He made it up to Netherlands to record his latest album, Continuum, which was released just about two weeks ago and was well received: “Shook's style gets more refined and distinct with each release. This album, though lacking bite in comparison, might just be the most coherent and whole yet”. S/O @davehawkins for the post.

It’s not often that we feature the same channel back to back, but #indie was moving this past week. And thanks to @clcmusic, we were introduced to NYC student and folk singer, Maggie Rogers. We aren’t the only ones impressed, as Pharrell was practically brought to tears after hearing her recently released song, “Alaska”. Hear for yourselves:

What else is going on?

You’ve probably seen a few artists (Ivan Ave, Benny Sings, KAYTRANADA, Anderson Paak, etc.) who’ve all released music through Jakarta Records somewhere in #music by now. And when a label is so consistent with quality sounds on the fringe of popularity, it is sometimes worth diving into some of their further off-grid music. 8 days ago, Jannis (Jakarta Records) released mixtape 006 of their Habibi Funk series which is the result of some crate digging adventures in North Africa. Definitely not the type of music you come across everyday, but definitely a good listen if you’re interested. Click the image below to listen.

Also, the Red Hot Chili Peppers released a brand new album called The Getaway...the first one that wasn’t produced/engineered by Rick Rubin since 1989. More on that here.

Don’t sleep on…

Jonwayne. It was only a matter of time until the dude appeared here on The Needle as he’s been a steady topic of conversation over in #hiphop over the past year or so. The producer/rapper who’s released music through Stones Throw got his start in poetry and ended up being damn good at it. He’s worked with Flying Lotus, Jeremiah Jae, Anderson Paak and more over the span of his career. Jonwayne seems to be one of those guys to put his true self out there via his music. It’s always refreshing to come across artists that care more about their artistry than their reputation.

Here's a perfect example:
Jonwayne - That's O.K.
